| 2008-07-17: PS3GRID - Launch of GPUGRID.net, BOINC on GPUs |
Finally GPU computing on BOINC! After delivering BOINC on Playstation last year, we are happy to announce that from today we are are able to distribute workunits on Nvidia GPUs. PS3grid.net and the new website GPUGRID.net go along to create a large infrastructure for biomolecular simulations. To run GPU workunits simply follow the instructions on the website.
Apart from us, this was made possible by a strong collaboration with BOINC developers and in particular David Anderson at Berkeley and Stefan and Keith from the BOINC community, already moderators at ps3grid. We also want to thank Nvidia for their important support.

This afternoon the project was down for an hour. We had to activate Fwnc7129 again and check the disks. Both machines Fwnc7128 and Fwnc7129 work fine now. The down time was in total not more than 4 hours and no results have been lost ;-). Phew!

Due to an unfortunate incident, one of our servers is momentarily down. Fwnc7129 had a failed harddisk, Fwnc7128 has been setup to take over and we are currently working very hard to restore and bring back online fwnc7129.

Tomorrow there will be a power cut-off at our institute. Therefore all
our servers will be shut down from today in the evening until wednesday
noontime. Moreover I will be out of office for the rest of the week.

By now the BOINC system has contributed more CPU-years in results than all previous email submissions combined to evolution@home. yoyo@home has now reached 162.63 CPU years, since the BOINC scheduler started in Nov 2007. Thus, the BOINC contributions have overtaken the results submission by email for the first time. Read more about it on evolutionary-research.

The number of WUs awaiting validation is now under 2000, so we should be back in business soon. We've also fixed the lensing problem with CAMB, so we'll be releasing a new app version soon. Before that, however, we have to let the work queue drain a bit, so we'll be keeping the WU generator offline until the queue goes back to normal.
