6/6/2009 15:35:59 FreeHAL@home Message from server: We can't do it like this. In May, we had between 10000 and 30000 work units which were crunched at the same time.
6/6/2009 15:35:59 FreeHAL@home Message from server: Now, we have are almost 200,000. And the project server is not able to handle this.

6/6/2009 15:35:59 FreeHAL@home Message from server: Now I decided to stop distributing work units for today to give server a chance.
6/6/2009 15:35:59 FreeHAL@home Message from server: Then, we have to find a solution. There are two possibilities:
6/6/2009 15:35:59 FreeHAL@home Message from server: 1.) We could lower the count of max work units at the same time to ~5 to ~10.
6/6/2009 15:35:59 FreeHAL@home Message from server: => less output, less credits, less server ressources
6/6/2009 15:35:59 FreeHAL@home Message from server: 2.) Or we need more server ressources, that would mean
6/6/2009 15:35:59 FreeHAL@home Message from server: either more donations or someone who donates a mirror, but i has to one with much bandwidth.
6/6/2009 15:35:59 FreeHAL@home Message from server: I ask you to discuss in your teams.

So can any one help out Tobias with some sever space

I also have to say another thing, even if I risk everything by saying it: I'm no adult. I'm 16.

I'm not prepared to donate either finances or server space to a child. Especially one who has proven his childishness with the tantrums he has thrown (giving millions of negative credits to one individual who pissed him off) and the arbitrary decisons he has made and arbitrary actions he has taken on the project without any advance warning or consultation with his volunteers.

@fan: This was cheating from nickth: The origanal text was:

Well regardless of his real chronological age, he certainly ACTS like a child as I've already said below ... so my position doesn't change.

[EDIT] I just went and double checked the messages in my client log and it does actually say ... "I am 16" [/EDIT]

Sorry fan,

I can only see my message log. I have this messages four times and not 1 time I'm seeing this age added to that sentence. Weird.
Perhaps it was in older messages. My first msg was of 19:06 UTC.

I'm pretty sure Tobias changed the text of the message. Set your project to ask for new tasks and you'll probably see the updated version. I saw both versions in my log too but the latest one has his age added in.

Well, perhaps you would have done it if you wouldn't know. I was even active in several free software projects when I was thirteen. But without ever telling anyone my real name, because there are enough people who wouldn't have accepted me. But there are also many who know that being a good programmer has nothing to do with the age.

The reason I said it now is that I wanted to know who I can trust, who wants to help the project. And there are many who want to do so. I know that I'm a better software developer than many who studied or learned it in an other way. That doesn't mean that I'm always able to act like I should act. That's a completely other aspect. But it means that I'm able to reach the goal of the project, and I have supporters who are prepared to donate finances and server space. And if I need more than I currently have, I will get them. Because I'm doing good work.

And being a good programmer has nothing to do with being a good project manager!

Tobias, now that I know that your real age, I sincerely applaud you in how far you have brought this project so far. Unfortunately if you want to depend on volunteers to donate computer time to process your work units, you have to keep your volunteers happy. That is where good project management skills come in.

I have supporters who are prepared to donate finances and server space

Take a lesson from the recent financial world news. General Motors, one of the worlds largest companies, has entered bankruptcy protection. Do you think they failed because they lacked server space or good programmers? No! They failed because they did not have good managers. You need good management to succeed.

My advice to you is find one of those "people who know that being a good programmer has nothing to do with age" and get them to volunteer their time to help you manage this project. You worry about the programming and the technical details and have your manager worry about fund-raising and have them set up a real flow of meaningful dialogue on your message boards. Have them update your home page news section daily with progress updates and non-technical explanations of problems encountered.

I think your project has serious potential and I wish you good luck in the future. But you won't get much farther than you have already gotten if you don't take steps to improve project management.

One last thing, I'm not necessarily suggesting that a project manager has to be an adult either. They can be 16 years old too. You have good "technical skills", a project manager needs good "people handling skills" which you seem to lack.

Very well said, fan13027!

PS. I remember Rytis from PrimeGrid wasn't very much older when he started his project!
In the early days of summer 2005 the whole thing was even run from his lappy... and these days we're gonna celebrate the 4th birthday of PrimeGrid already!
So the age definitely doesn't really matter.
Greetings from Cori

Anyone know whats happened @FreeHal? They issued a Ban list of 481 IPs (incl me!!!) - problem was they didnt check properly ..... It seems it has something to do with "using IP Tables" to spam the board?? (that was a translation from their german board - so dont hang your hat off it as such.

I have a static IP, I have to, due to the PABX office setup etc etc - it maybe that the static IP triggered whatever "test" was employed. However, whatever the "Test" was, it was incredibly stupidly managed, and I have a feeling there maybe mayhem over there right now. If it was the static IP that triggered it, I cant believe I am the only one affected.

To say I am blazing angry about all this is the understatement of the Decade - I am no spammer !!!! grrrrrrrr......

If there is anyone out there who still has access to the Freehal Board, grateful you have a look and post here whats going on - at present I cant get at it, and only found out the reason I could not connect with BAM! or with the message board, via an online translation of a separate german forum. They have also been offline re stats for 48 hrs - the latter is not unusual as such, its an Alpha Project, but its too much coincidence they are off-line on stats, when this IP saga is going on.

I would be most grateful if anyopne out there could shed some light on what is happening over there.

Zy

It turns out I was on the list too, so I had no access. I have changed my IP# though so I have regained access. Zydor, the post from your team-mate earlier is now gone! It looks like the message boards have been sanitized (read -- heavily censored and posts removed) so I have no idea what current state of affairs is.

If you're wondering if you are on the list, but can't get to it to check ...

Strange, I can still see it here http://www.freehal.org/node/426

I also have to say another thing, even if I risk everything by saying it: I'm no adult. I'm 16.

I'm not prepared to donate either finances or server space to a child. Especially one who has proven his childishness with the tantrums he has thrown (giving millions of negative credits to one individual who pissed him off) and the arbitrary decisons he has made and arbitrary actions he has taken on the project without any advance warning or consultation with his volunteers.

I was 15 when I made Renderfarm@Home.

FreeHAL is not "non-cpu-intensive". It does no network activity or anything like that.

It's "CPU intensive", but only takes six seconds of processing. The code is full of intentional delays to make it use less than 1% CPU and take hours to finish.

I really don't see the point, if each WU only needs 6 seconds of processing, maybe a BOINC project isn't even needed.

It's probably spent more time down than up since Tobias installed it

I've Detached the FreeHal Project from a lot of my Box's, the Project has Cost me way more Credits than I'll ever get from it with it's constant Down Time. My ATI GPU Box's try to connect to the Project, can't and then just sit there for 10-15 minutes not connecting to any of the Projects & all the while I run out of Milkyway Wu's for the ATI Cards so their doing nothing then ... Tobias & his Fubar Project just ain't worth all the Headache's it is to try & run his Project.

Hi, Im really interested ;-)

how can you say that ? did you read the code behind FreeHAL@home ?

did you solve you doubt: "if... maybe a BOINC project isn't even needed" ?

Answer me this: If it's not CPU intensive, then what does it do? It doesn't seem to use the network either. What computer resource does it use?

OK, it doesn't use the network

maybe its NOT CPU intensiveness is a strategy but I don't understand why. The point is, as you said, what does it do?
