I just signed up for WCG and when I tried to get work, I recieved the following error message:

Sat Oct 21 23:33:53 2006|World Community Grid|Sending scheduler request to https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/boinc/wcg_cgi/fcgi
Sat Oct 21 23:33:53 2006|World Community Grid|Reason: Requested by user

Sat Oct 21 23:33:59 2006|World Community Grid|Message from server: No work could be sent.
Sat Oct 21 23:33:59 2006|World Community Grid|Message from server: No disk space (YOU must free 17573.2 MB before BOINC gets space). Review preferences for minimum disk free space allowed.

Why does WCG need 17.573 GB of disk space?!? that would take forever on my dialup connection...

I have about 2.5 GB available HD on my iMac G4, MacOS 10.4.8, 700 MHz, 1 GB RAM running BOINC 5.4.9

[edit]My other projects d/l and crunch just fine with no complaints about disk space - Rosetta, Einstein, SETI[/edit]

Currently my WCG takes up 32MB on the disc.
It has 1 WU crunching. currently at 75% and preempted.
That size doesn't mean I've DLed that much, but that the application needs that much space for intermediate results, perhaps unzipped datafiles, and whatever else.

What will downsize the traffic as well is that the application itself has to DLed only once (and in case of an update), so not always the full monty.

Edit:
Here's a link to the systems requiery for the 3 WCG sub-projects.

Check the settings in your global preferences for "Leave at least x.x GB disk space free" and "Use no more than x% of total disk space". I guess one of these is stopping WGC from downloading, eg your setting might be "leave at least 20 GB disk space free".

Some looking around (some imput from WCG forum, details) and I found out that WCG servers did not accept the preferences set by BAM!, my host (according to WCG) was using the default General prefs set to leave at least 20 GB free, but I only had 2.5 GB free hence the needed 17.5 GB additional space. I set prefs at WCG manually and now it's all working. If my customized General prefs (set here at BAM!) would have gone through it would have been alright.

Is there an issue with updating prefs at WCG through BAM!?

Thanks for the replies

BTW, WCG's folder is only 1.5 MB, so it really doesn't need 17.5 GB, phew.

Yup, I should have looked around a bit more. I remember reading those threads before but didn't read them close enough I guess. And I just came across the "Supported Projects" page that tells me what I spent a day to figure out... (feeling sheepishly silly). Thanks anyway, happy crunching!
