I would like to know what GPU you guys are using and what kind of results are you having? I am currently using an Radeon 6770, and it does pretty well, but people are telling me that Nvida raps circles around ATI cards. In addition according to the manufacturer if I want to do folding I ought to get an Nvida card. I have seen some of the grids like Prime that the best cards are the GTX 850 and 950, but these are very expensive. Is there anything compariable without the cost? My guess is no, so if I wanted to change from the Radeon 6770 card which Nvida card should I go for within the same price range and would there be any significant differneces when folding or for other graphics and games? Thanks

Some projects favor ATI cards over nVIDIA credit-wise. Having only nVIDIA cards myself, can't say for sure which these are. I have seen forum threads discussing the matter however.... See Augustine's locked thread in the BOINC section of the forum (AMD client) for a list of projects that have apps for ATI cards.

Hi, you seem to be the only one that replies to my threads. Thank you. :-)

I get anywhere from 1800 to 2600 for primegride and 375-3000 credit for collatz and prime projects, is that a lot?

I am thinking of changing my card to Nvida, that is why I was asking, as they said ATI cards are not really for folding, they can't handle it as well.

I have a GTX460 card from nVIDIA that is slightly overclocked. It will finish a PPS (sieve) work unit in 27mins for 3371 credits, or about 7k/hr. On Collatz, the same card gets about 3k/hr on the longer app and can finish a mini-collatz work unit in 459sec for 376 credits. Check under tasks on your account page at both projects and compare your run times to these. Not sure how a 6770 should stack up. A GTX460 can be had for less than $150 USD for sure, probably less by now. However, before you buy, check out a website called GPUReview. There you can compare cards side by side. In general, the more wattage a card requires the faster it is. What you are looking for is number of cuda cores or shaders... the more the better (for nVIDIA).

I can't tell you how fast I do the work unit because each one is different from the start. Some say 49 minutes I finish in 6 minutes. others take 1.5 hours.

I was considering the GTX 550 ti, but looking at the Gflops, my current ATI card is almost double the Nvida card. I did a check on the website you gave me, but I feel the GTX card is not as good.. What do you think? http://www.gpureview.com/show_cards.php?card1=647&card2=658

At the PrimeGrid website, click on your account and scroll down to tasks. This will bring up your work unit history. Click on the valid tab at the top of the page. This will show your run time and granted credit for each completed work unit. BTW, I thought a 6770 would blow a 460 out of the water. If you are running more than one PrimeGrid application, take care to note which app grants how many credits. For GPU tasks, run time is more important than CPU time. From this info, you can figure your credit/hr.

On Prime:
Run time in Seconds 4,477.06
CPU time in seconds 393.45
Credit 3,371.00
Project PPS (Sieve) v1.38 (ati13ati)

On Collatz:
Run time in Seconds 2,917.32
CPU time in Seconds 2,916.31
Total credit 2,911.13
collatz v2.09 (ati13ati)

Seems like the collatz is offering more because of the total run time is shorter.

do you think I would see anything better with the 550? The shredder cores are half of the ATI card, but I remember someone once tellingme don't be fooled by the numbers, but I don't know how the Nvida card could do better than this... Should I get a 6790 ATI card instead? Or perhaps an nvida 560 I just cannot tell. Prime doesn't like anything beyond the first top like 20 video cards and those cards there are very high end and over 400 bucks.. so...

All those cards are out of my price range so I am unfamiliar with their specs. Be careful to watch your power supply rating...

I have a 450W power supply, is that enough?

I think GPUReview can provide that information. Or look up the card specs... they generally provide a recommended power supply rating.

Hiya, I asked the manufacturer as I could not find the answer even on their website, and they said that the 450 I have should be ok. The 550 ti has slightly more power consumption than my current card, so it's ok. most of these cards are out of my price range also, $100 bucks or so is generally my limit.
