Einstein is badly down...

With all these workunit outages, I'm thinking twice about spending $30-40 per month extra on my electric bill for all the PCs I use just for this :-(

@ Groo: Good! More work for the rest of us!

Just join more than one project. I have yet to see a time when SETI, Predictor, Climate, LHC, and Einstein were all down at the same time. Even if you only give 5-10 percent to some of them, and the rest to your "main" project, you will always have work.

Einstein now has this on their home page: The Einstein server went down some time around 12:40 Wednesday morning. We are currently analyzing the situation and will provide more information as the situation is being handled.

@ Groo - some of us manage to spend lots more. My average DC electric bill (comps are on separate meter) runs $350 per month during the winter, $450 per month during the summer with A/C...

@Groo: You leave PCs on just to run BOINC? If you are running CPDN, I hope you appreciate the irony!

Some even build entire Networks just for DC A sad irony it would be, if we didn't use the available resources for science to accomplish achievments that otherwise would be impossible... See it that way : I we don't do it, who would...?

forgot : also keep in mind that all the world's Computing assets together are still completely neglectable to the many other Energy wasting going on worldwide. At least the energy 'we' spend is spent on something very dedicated and useful.

I am running SETI, CPDN, ProteinPredictor, LHC, Einstein and Folding on my desktop and have just added Folding to the HT laptop as well, just for a try. My PCs are on 24/7 most of the time, unless there are blackouts or storms... at least they are doing something useful rather than just sitting there! ;-)

I read once that personal computers now are responsible for about 15% of the U.S. power consumption -- I'm not sure this qualifies as negligible. http://www.research.vt.edu/resmag/2002winter/power.html So, if you're computer is on anyway, getting some more CPDN crunching makes perfect sense. But to leave your computer on just to run CPDN truly does create an interesting conundrum. Is your contribution to the CPDN research proportional to the additional environmental cost of running the PC for no other purpose?

It makes perfect sense to run your computer 24/7 during winter. Keeps the home nice and toasty (don't have to pay the heater bill). And crunches for science. Now during the summer, I think it may make sense to turn a few of these things off.

M! That article you reference indicates 15% used by ALL computational and telecommunication products, not just PC's. Further, there are only ~200k systems running these programs vs MILLIONS that are not.

I'm about to hit 30,000 on SETI and have just over 23,000 in Predictor. I'm about to break 10,000 in my world position. Everyone here (myself included) is such a nerd!!!

anyone know if they will convert s@h classic credits to boinc at some point?
Guest

2005-05-27 18:02:17

@Woobly: They ought to do that. They said they would. But if it is anytime going to happen? Noone knows for sure.

@ LazySod, Woobly: Actually they have specifically said in many places that they refuse to ever convert classic units to BOINC credits... partially because there was a lot of cheating in classic (not accusing you), and because it's like comparing apples to oranges
