Hi Willy,

I'm not sure where to post my question (and maybe I was just unable to find the information in the forum), but I'm curious about the infrastructure/hardware that BOINCstats is currently running on? All I found was something about "4 webservers", all that inside a DC near to your place (you link to some DC specs in a donation/cost thread iirc)... I'm interested in the specs of the whole "package", incl. some facts and thoughts about the current state and/or hardware replacements in the near future etc.; the technical aspects, you know :-). I hope that's not a problem for you to talk about these details ;-).

Best wishes,

Christian

Depends on the reason for your interest. Not sharing the infrastructure is part of proper security.

Hi Willey,

I'd just like to get an idea on how much resources (incl. manpower) it currently takes/needs to run this platform, especially the processing of all the stats on the hardware side. I don't know if there are any threads here for discussing things like optimizing processes or hardware related issues, or your latest "wishes" for improvements which may also depend on new fund raisings (next to the donations for the monthly operating costs)... I just found a few news where now and then a RAID controller went to nirvana and similar which affected the server integrities. I don't know how reasonable a centralized place for these kind of things/information/discussions might be (as far as you are willing to share with us).

It's just a general interest that's going beyond your statement of all still being a "hobby project" (lead by just one lonely brave knight? ;-)), because we all know that it's not - BAM! became an indispensable part of our everyday (Boinc-)life. I hope that we all can keep you motivated :-).

Thanks and best wishes,

Christian

Without going into much detail (doing this from memory/I'm at work):

  • Two firewall servers
  • Two webservers (Xeons, 24GB, 4 HDD, 4 SSD each)
  • One stats update server (Opteron, 32GB, 2 HDD, 8 SSD)
  • One PDU
  • One KVM
  • One 1GB switch
  • Lots of cables

All crammed into a 15u server rack with dual 100Mbit network connection, dual power supply, backup up by a huge APC and three diesel generators (not mine ).

To offload the webservers CloudFlare is used.

It's a one man project.
