Hi there! I hope this question is not redundant -- I searched the forums but couldn't come up with anything.

I am looking for recommendations for what people would consider the most accurate CPU temperature monitoring software. I currently run a utility called PC Wizard, but there is quite a discrepancy between temperatures reported by that software and the temperature monitoring system included in my BIOS (BIOS shows cooler temps, but of course the CPU is not under full load when I'm in the BIOS).

Motherboard: Asus P5GD1 with Intel 915 chipset
CPU: Intel 630 processor SL7Z9 - P4 3.0 Ghz with hyperthreading

I see from your host list that you are using XP. There is a utility called PC Probe that you can download from Asus or install from your MB disk, i found that to be pretty accurate, it also shows you the chipset temperature and some voltages.

Thanks for the suggestion! Just tried it and unfortunately it doesn't work. When installing and afterwards when running, it tells me it can't recognize the chipset. The monitor ends up giving me all kinds of monitor information EXCEPT the CPU temp -- CPU temp is reported as N/A.

Next!

I use Coretemp or RealTemp for temperature monitoring in Windows. I'm using RealTemp now, but i think they are both about as good as each other. Both can give you real-time temperature monitoring in the taskbar and RealTemp has the option to monitor GPU temps as well. Not sure about Coretemp. Not used it for a while.

Based on Laz-uk's suggestion some time ago in another forum (thanks Mark!), I use Core Temp on my Q66 that runs Vista and find it to be a nice utility. I'm not on that machine now, so I can't confirm, but I don't think it monitors GPU temps.

The only problem I have -- and it's really a Vista issue, I think -- is that I have to grant it permission to run at start-up. I followed the instructions in the app's Help section (I think) to get around that, but to no avail. Since it appears you're running XP, that might not be a problem for you.

Good Luck!

Well, I finally managed to get the Asus monitoring software (that came with my motherboard) to work properly. After monitoring for a couple of days it came as no surprise that my Intel CPU was running quite warm -- not dangerously warm, but warmer than I would like to see it. Plus the noise from the original stock Intel cooling fan was driving me nuts!

So today I installed an Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro (32$C plus taxes). WOW AM I IMPRESSED !!!

Intel rates the CPU at 80ºC -- and I was never really too close to that, so no real worries, but the noise OY !

So, here's the before stats ...
MotherBoard temps both at idle and at load approx 41-43ºC
CPU temp at idle 57ºC
CPU temp at load 64-70ºC

And the after stats !!!
MotherBoard temp at idle 34ºC
MotherBoard temp at load 37ºC
CPU temps at idle 37-47ºC
CPU temps at load 49-51ºC

So about a 15-20ºC drop in CPU temperatures under load. And meanwhile not a peep from the fan! Like I said ... WOW I'm impressed
