Mozilla will ship Firefox 3.5 on Tuesday, bringing the long-awaited upgrade in under its own deadline wire, the company announced last Friday.

According to a Mozilla spokeswoman, the final version of Firefox 3.5 will be posted for download tomorrow morning, Pacific time.

Firefox accounted for 22.5% of the browser market, according to the most recent data from Web metrics company Net Applications. It faces renewed competition on almost every front, including Microsoft's Internet Explorer 8, Google's Chrome, Opera Software's Opera and Apple's Safari 4.

When Mozilla releases Firefox 3.5 for Windows, Mac and Linux, it will be available for download from the company's site. Existing users will be able to grab it by selecting "Check for Updates" within the browser.

Firefox 3.5 Can Still Learn From Its Competition

While Mozilla lights a fire under competing browsers with support of emerging Web standards with Firefox 3.5, it can still improve its performance, reliability, and usability.

Firefox has the misleading status of second most popular browser. Two-thirds of all sites are still visited by some version of Internet Explorer. It’s no secret that Microsoft only wins because the majority of computer users run Windows and aren’t quite savvy enough to make a conscious decision about which browser to use. In fact, when 50 people in Times Square were asked, “What is a browser?”, most confused it with a search engine.

However, with somewhere between 20 and 30 percent of the browser market, Firefox has the distinction of being the most popular browser chosen by individuals who actually consciously think about what browser to use.

Mozilla’s Firefox 4 was released early Tuesday. The release comes nearly two years after Firefox 3.5 and three years after Firefox 3.

The web browsing landscape has changed significantly since then, with Google’s Chrome browser winning converts left and right, while mobile and tablet browsing gained new ground.

When Firefox first hit the scene in the early 2000s, Mozilla’s open-source browser was a refreshing change of pace for users and designers alike. It brought innovative features like tabbed browsing to the mainstream (although Opera did it first). It used add-ons to an extent that hadn’t been seen before.

I've had nothing but trouble with v4.0 so far, a Virus this morning that I had to get rid of & now the Browser opens but just shuts down again a few seconds later. Version 3.6.12 runs fine though ... Windows XP 64 Bit

I have no need (or desire) to be on the "bleeding edge" with my browser. I'll stick with my current version of Firefox (3.6.16) until at least ver 4.1 is released thank you very much

The same with OS releases, no need to upgrade until MicroSoft releases the first "service pack". I still have Win7 (with SP1) loaded on only one of my three hosts. The others still have a nice stable WinXP-SP3 installed.

I have the v4.0 installed on 2 Box's where it runs just fine, but on my Main Box where I would like to use it it run's but at times is a PITA. I have to restart it several times before it will stay running. Other Times it will lock up the System completely for some reason. I thought it was maybe because I uninstalled Java a few weeks ago. But after reinstalling Java it still has the same problems so I just reverted back to v3.6.16 for now on that Box & will wait for the next Updated Version to come out to try it again ...
