Microsoft has published a video outlining key concepts for its Generation 4 Modular Data Center , which it unveiled in Dec 2008. Heres a look at the details of the new design, which relies on data center containers, modular pre-fabriacted electrical and mechanical infrastructure, and no chillers.

The demo shows a real-time simulated ocean under twilight lighting condition. To obtain good looking wave crests, a rather large height field has to be employed. With Microsoft's newly introduced DirectX Compute Shader we can efficiently perform FFT on GPU, thus greatly improve the performance and image quality. The water surface is mainly modeled after Jerry Tessendorf's statistic method described in the paper "Simulating Ocean Water", which is one of the most popular techniques used for water effect in todays games.

Although the algorithm itself is capable of producing visually impressive result from a presumed statistic model (Phillips spectrum), previous implementations are often limited to a relatively small height field, e.g. 64x64 or 128x128, due to the slow FFT code path on CPU. For example, the demo shown here executes three 512x512 Fourier transforms on a per frame basis. On a GTX280, the transforms can be finished within 2 milliseconds.

The numerical method and parallel code used to perform this simulation were developed at the University of Texas at Austin. High performance computing resources were provided by the Arctic Region Supercomputing Center at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. The video was produced by the Data Analysis and Assessment Center, the unclassified visualization center of the Department of Defense High Performance Computing Modernization Program. This research was sponsored by the Office of Naval Research and NASA Johnson Space Center.

Nucleus Medical Media's 3D medical animation of a baby's birth shows a time lapse view of labor and delivery during normal vaginal birth in a simplified form with only the mother's skeletal structures and the baby in the uterus. Also shown in detail is dilatation (dilation or dilating) and effacement (thinning) of the cervix during childbirth contractions.

Music: Prelude from Bach's Cello Suite No. 1

A real-time snow simulation created at the NTNU (Norwegian University of Science and Technology) HPC-lab.

The movement of each individual snowflake is simulated in real-time using a GPU. A windfield affects the snow particles, in addition to gravity and a spiraling motion. The windfield is simulated with CFD methods (extensions of Stable Fluids), using an SOR-based iterative equation solver for calculating the pressure field. As snow builds up on the ground, the texture changes, as well as the level of the ground. The simulation is programmed for CUDA, the visualization is made using OpenGL.

New results from the Roadrunner Universe Project -- As part of the Roadrunner Open Science Runs over the summer this year, some of the world's largest cosmology simulations have been carried out. A team of scientists from ISR-, T-, and CCS-Division developed the first cosmological simulation code to run on future hybrid high-performance architectures and carried out nine simulations with 64 billion particles each on Roadrunner. The analysis of these ultra-large simulations has just been finished.

In collaboration with researchers from UC Berkeley, baryon acoustic oscillation features in the inter-galactic medium have been studied from these simulations. The measurement of baryon acoustic oscillations is one of the most promising methods to further our understanding of dark energy and a major target of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey III.

The Roadrunner simulations can for the first time simultaneously resolve the Jeans scale of the intergalactic gas while covering the large volumes required to adequately sample the acoustic feature. The results have been submitted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal. (LA-UR 10-00172) See more about Los Alamos National Laboratory research at http://www.lanl.gov

The Known Universe takes viewers from the Himalayas through our atmosphere and the inky black of space to the afterglow of the Big Bang. Every star, planet, and quasar seen in the film is possible because of the world's most complete four-dimensional map of the universe, the Digital Universe Atlas that is maintained and updated by astrophysicists at the American Museum of Natural History.

Alyotech Technologies is developing a real-time GPU-based ocean scene simulator, in order to meet the challenging requirements arising from marine survey issues.

Central to our model design is a precise and efficient description of the animated sea surface, based on both state of-the-art results in oceanography and advanced 3D computing techniques. A crucial point is that Visible, IR and EM signal computations share a single surface model.

Thanks to CUDA-based GPU implementation, real-time performances (20 FPS) are achieved on desktop computers with large sea surface meshes including ~5 millions polygons.

This multi-spectral, interactive simulator is planed to be used for :
· Support to future marine survey systems design (sensor, processing algorithms ...)
· Search And Rescue training
· Real time target and polluting vessels detection and identification

For almost 20 years astrophysicists have been trying to recreate the formation of spiral galaxies such as our Milky Way realistically. Now astrophysicists from the University of Zurich present the world's first realistic simulation of the formation of our home galaxy together with astronomers from the University of California at Santa Cruz. The new results were partly calculated on the computer of the Swiss National Supercomputing Center (CSCS) and show, for instance, that there has to be stars on the outer edge of the Milky Way.

Realtime River Simulation

This is my end of year project for physics and animation in Interactive Entertainment Technology Msc. Trinity College Dublin.

All water calculations occur on the GPU. Grid size is 1024x1024 and frame rates when not recording are around 20fps on my C2D @ 3.15Ghz and an ATi 2900HD.
