Today I added partial World Community Grid support to BAM!. Partial because although BAM! can read from the project (find accounts, find teams, read CPID etc), BAM! can’t update anything. So BAM! can’t set the team ID, the recourse share or any other setting.

It is possible to use BAM! to attach your hosts to WCG.

Thanks for adding this project.

I kinda do not considr WCG as BOINC project as it is still far from being a BOINC project.
For example, WCG doesn't allow duplicate user names so I had to choose another name. Well, I guess it makes me unable to attach via BAM! ...or at least I haven't been able to add WCG to project list via sign-up for projects page.

Had the same problem. Cannot add WCG to project list via sign-up for projects page. States Wrong password when I try. I had to use a different user name at WCG due to their not allowing duplicate user names so this may be causing the failure. The password on WCG is the same as for my other projects under BAM. Looks like we will have to wait for WCG to catch up as I do not want to change my user ID for the other projects.

WCG will never support duplicate user names.

BTW: BAM! and PrimeGrid also do not support duplicate usernames.

Well, it does makes sense to have a unique user name.
But does it makes sense to change user name on all BOINC project after 2+ years just because of WCG?
So, if users from other projects would like to participate in WCG, they will to dela with following issues:
- find a unique name from those thousands already occupied in WCG db.
- break the rule of their single username on BOINC
- abandom BAM! create account
- abandom BAM! attach method
...you can add more.
If more projects does as WCG, it will put further constrains both on users side and BAM! (or any other BAM system).

My point is: would be it of less pain for everybody to just cope with BOINC standards, which is - so far - enabling duplicate usernames?
Why can't we match using unique e-mail address (hash)?

I got no problem with unique names on BAM! - it's a unique project :-)
(doesn't have to be unique among 30 project)

Projects are free to decide on whatever they want to do with BOINC its up to them to do as they please, WCG has always has unique user names and does on BOINC due to the systems they use.

Oh and BAM is not a project as you state above its an Account Manager

I tried to add WCG to my BAM account, but I got a wrong password error too, although I have the same user name on all of of my projects. Does WCG need to have the same password as my BAM account? Should all my projects, as well as my BAM account, have the same password?

Yes!
Same name and same Password for every project.
That's the way BAM authenticates itself to the projects, otherwise everybody could just use your username and manage your account for you, and I don't think that'll be nice

Thank you Saenger and Willy! Strangely enough, all my other projects were able to connect with different passwords, but no matter now - WCG is attached and all is good.

...the name is'nt a big problem, but WCG did just allow letters and numbers as PW.
So all user with another sign in their PW, my one is a minus (-), are'nt able to attach the project to the BAM.
If a project uses BOINC it has to use the usuallys!!!
It's working. Why the go another way? Just to make troubles? ;-)
I stopped using WCG bec. i don't like to make every changing manually and again!
BTW: WCG goes unusually (i think unfair) ways in other things allso. So for me it's no problem to put them out! (... very sad - WCG has a great science thematic in their projects)

HI,

I read this tread, but I'm not sure.
Does WCG need to have the same username as all other projects or not.

I have a different username for WCG but for all projects and BAM the same password.
(Just changed them to the simple WCG one).

Now I get wrong password while trying to attach to my account.

Is there a way to attach without changing all other projects?
)And what happend if all other are changed, I attached WCG and change all others back?)

Thanks

Achim

Hi there. (Sort of) newbie here. I'm also trying to get BAM to read my WCG stats, but have been unsucessful so far.

What I have is this - my email and password in BAM and WCG are identical, but username is not, due to the WCG policy of not allowing duplicate usernames. When I try to attach to WCG from BAM using the "Find Account" option (under "Sign-up for projects" ), I get a "wrong password" error.

Reading through the thread seems to give conflicting views as to what exactly is required (e.g., Messrs. Saenger on 7/26/2006 and Tank_Master on 12/3/2006), so I'm not certain if I misread something.

So, if someone would be so kind as to indulge this newbie, what needs to be identical for BAM to attach to WCG - (i) username and password, or (ii) email and password? Or is there something else I need to do to attach?

Many thanks in advance guys.

To read your WCG stats? Maybe you meant something different, but stats (credits, rankings...) aren't related to this.

My apologies if I wasn't clear. I'm still not familiar with the terminology. What I meant was that I was trying to attach BAM to WCG so stats could be displayed on BAM, like the other projects I crunch. To cut a long story short, I would like to add WCG to my project list in BAM.

Take a look in the F.A.Q.
Using different names.
Using different email addresses.

larry1186, many thanks for your reply. The FAQ was indeed the first place I looked before posting to the forum. I had also read the threads relating to WCG to see if I could solve the problem on my own, but it seems that no-one else has the same difficulty. My understanding from reading the threads, and the relevant sections of the FAQ is that only the email address needs to be identical, and that the username is irrelevant for the purposes of attachment.

Which leads me to the crux of my problem - the email address I entered for WCG and BAM (and all other projects I crunch for) is identical, but I still can't add WCG to my project list in BAM.

So, given that I have (or at least I think I have) fulfilled the technical requirements for adding WCG to my project list, there should be no reason why I cannot do so. Hence my request for assistance from the old-timers here, who might be able to tell me if I missed something.

Given that your email and passwords are all identical, and since BAM! has no control over WCG, you need to go to WCG and add your hosts and set up your prefs there (again since BAM! has no control over WCG). Once your hosts are added and attached and set up through the WCG site, BOINCstats will pick up the credit statistics on the next stats update and WCG should show up in your project list in BAM! (but you will still not be able to set resource share or any other prefs for WCG).

larry1186, that's worth a try. I didn't think of approaching the issue from the other direction. Many thanks again, and hopefully this will be the last anyone hears from me about WCG connection problems!

it's because BAM! can't update anything to WCG that even if I a share of 500 to WCG and 100 or less to the others (currently 100 to WCG and 50 to Rossetta) that my machines do lots of work in the otehrs projects and less work in WCG?

how can I change this?

Yes!

Why not to allow to set username specially for WCG account?

Hi,

I'd like this as well. WCG is the only project I can't control from BAM as my general password uses special characters. Is there any chance that the above suggestion could be done?

WCG uses heavily modified versions of the server software. So it is the project preventing more complete use of the account managers. They have talked about adding more support but I have not seen a timeline. It may also be difficult or impossible since they must support the UD agent as well as the BOINC agent.
