The new computers make innovative use of graphics processing units - a technological breakthrough, which the company claims could bring lightning speeds to the next generation of home computers.

They went on sale to British customers yesterday and will initially be sold to universities and to the scientific and research community.

The PC maker Dell, however, said that it would soon be mass producing them for the general consumer market.

Eric Greffier, a Dell senior executive, said: "Before mobile phones were reserved for the few, now we can't live without them. It will be the same with these supercomputers. They are the building block for the computing of the future."

Nvidia claims Tesla will open up China


Nvidia said GeoStar has a seismic software suite that in combination with its Tesla graphics processing unit will speed up the search for oil deposits.

According to Nvidia, the Institute of Geology and Geophysics at the Chinese Academy of Sciences has spent months testing its Tesla GPUs with the GeoStar software.

Nvidia claims that shows that 24 Tesla GPUs processed 740 square kilometres of data 600 times faster than a cluster using 66 CPUs.

It's not just oil and gas. The massively parallel CUDA architecture using Tesla chips is changing the face of other industries too. But in the oil and gas industries this change is "profound".

Nvidia rehearses this argument. Power consumption for running and cooling servers in data centers is a major portion of operational expenses. But its GPU based cluster give much higher performance than CPU only clusters.

NVIDIA Tesla GPUs now shipping with Dell 'personal supercomputers'

Been itching to get your hands on a personal supercomputer, as NVIDIA's ad wizards put it? The company has just announced that its CUDA-based Tesla C1060 GPU is now available in Dell's Precision R5400, T5500 and T7500 workstations.

And just to put things into perspective, NVIDIA points out that a Dell workstation rockin' a single Tesla C1060 has enough going on under the hood to power the control system for the European Extremely Large Telescope project ("the world's largest," apparently). According to one of the developers, Jeff Meisel at National Instruments, a workstation "equipped with a single Tesla C1060 can achieve near real-time control of the mirror simulation and controller, which before wouldn't be possible in a single machine without the computational density offered by GPUs."
