The new computers make innovative use of graphics processing units - a technological breakthrough, which the company claims could bring lightning speeds to the next generation of home computers.

They went on sale to British customers yesterday and will initially be sold to universities and to the scientific and research community.

The PC maker Dell, however, said that it would soon be mass producing them for the general consumer market.

Eric Greffier, a Dell senior executive, said: "Before mobile phones were reserved for the few, now we can't live without them. It will be the same with these supercomputers. They are the building block for the computing of the future."

David Kirk Discusses How Tesla Personal Supercomputers Evolved (Part 1 of 2)

Supercomputers evolved from the growing needs of researchers and scientists wanting to have their own personal supercomputer workstation at their desk capable of conducting faster more compute intensive processing rather than just increasing processor cores for nominal performance gains without compromising on space, heat dissipation and setting up adequate power supply.

Nvidia claims Tesla will open up China

Nvidia said GeoStar has a seismic software suite that in combination with its Tesla graphics processing unit will speed up the search for oil deposits.

According to Nvidia, the Institute of Geology and Geophysics at the Chinese Academy of Sciences has spent months testing its Tesla GPUs with the GeoStar software.

Nvidia claims that shows that 24 Tesla GPUs processed 740 square kilometres of data 600 times faster than a cluster using 66 CPUs.

It's not just oil and gas. The massively parallel CUDA architecture using Tesla chips is changing the face of other industries too. But in the oil and gas industries this change is "profound".

Nvidia rehearses this argument. Power consumption for running and cooling servers in data centers is a major portion of operational expenses. But its GPU based cluster give much higher performance than CPU only clusters.

NVIDIA Tesla GPUs now shipping with Dell 'personal supercomputers'

Been itching to get your hands on a personal supercomputer, as NVIDIA's ad wizards put it? The company has just announced that its CUDA-based Tesla C1060 GPU is now available in Dell's Precision R5400, T5500 and T7500 workstations.

And just to put things into perspective, NVIDIA points out that a Dell workstation rockin' a single Tesla C1060 has enough going on under the hood to power the control system for the European Extremely Large Telescope project ("the world's largest," apparently). According to one of the developers, Jeff Meisel at National Instruments, a workstation "equipped with a single Tesla C1060 can achieve near real-time control of the mirror simulation and controller, which before wouldn't be possible in a single machine without the computational density offered by GPUs."

But will BOINC run on it? That is the question.

afaik at least GPUgrid will do. probably COLLATZ, MW and YETI will do also.

Dr Graham Pullan, Research Scientist at Cambridge University discusses how TESLA Personal Supercomputers are helping them to make the medical image registration process faster and more efficient, design turbo machinery in real time when previously this was impossible without the aid of large processor clusters, conduct interactive image processing and point tracking with wide reaching implications especially in practical medical treatment and solving the mysteries of origins of the universe.

Heres another behind the scenes look at NVIDIA. General manager Andy Keane explains how Tesla-based servers will help engineers and scientists solve complex problems, with teraflop-class computing at their fingertips. With the first wave of Tesla-based servers launching earlier this week and more news from OEMs expected in the weeks ahead -- this is an exciting time for the Tesla team.
