Well the load got to the system and crashed the disk on the main server. I use GlusterFS to replicate the disk live, just in case - so I was able to recover pretty much everything. I'll be sending the logs to the GlusterFS community so they can see if they can see what happened. It looks to be like the load just got too much and the FS started to miss blocks.

Whilst the disk rebuilt, I upgrade the two server from an AWS m1.small instance to a c1.medium so I can cope with more load (I hope).

All working fine so far Kevin, and it looks like the servers are able to handle the load, GREAT WORK =)

The new server configuration is running at about 50% load on each server.

Looks like everything has caught up - servers running at 20-30% load. 32,000 task being worked on - and area 1,000,000 has just been issued.

What an interesting Challenge. 3 Power failures, the project down for awhile. I got flooded under the house and the wind broke a window. Just recovered from hours of Internet failure due to the floods effecting the main cable from Sydney to Brisbane. Crunch on...

@Freddy - while there was some overlap, in general the fires and the floods were in different parts of the country. Yes, some of Siding Spring was damaged, but mostly the telescopes are ok.

Lets just hope the death toll doesn't go up any more over these floods. Australia sure does get some intense disasters. I'm just remembering the Black Saturday bush fires in Victoria back in 2009.
