As per a new age suggested in the challenge name, wouldn't that be if we got our hands on alien tech? I know many an inner city folk that would prefer being able to say 'beam me up Scotty", vs having to cope with traffic in the morning commute to work...

A New Age here doesn't mean we have alien technology to start afresh with a revolutionary change. It only means that we are entering new cycle with new promises and new resolution; just as we enter a new year. The journey of SETI continues for ever. The target of the exercise keeps moving, there is always a search for the next best thing. It's the journey that matters, not the end target, as there is no such thing.

But that's just the point, it's not that much of a new age then, lol Something isn't that new, if it's but an extention of the old, rofl

Oh well, market speak and PR meets philosophy over what the nature of new is, I guess And nothing about end targets have been mentioned, though if you mean to say that life on other planets doesn't exist, that would be another debate entirely. It's a very big universe, and perhaps it's our own definition of life which is also a bit narrow, as the discovery of extremophiles on the Earth itself has shown us...

What's new is the renewed hope! As I said, just as it's in the case of New Year - what's new year if not for the new hope, it's just another day. I didn't mean to say that life does not exist on another planet or not. Quoting from the 1997 movie "Contact" - "I'd say if it is just us... seems like an awful waste of space."

lol, first I was half joking... But secondly, when people talk about a new age they can dream a lot bigger which is precdisely what I was getting at. Not all figured as the Maiyans, that all would end. Some talked of "a third age", age of peace and enlightenment, golden age of aquarius, all that talk. That would be more of a new age, then a simple extention of the status quo, one that many around the world (look at the Arab Spring for instance) that many have already grown tired of...

Why would the world end at 21-12-2012? I bet someone made a mistake, or that the original Mayan stone had not enough room.

The world is not going to end at 21-12-2012. It's just that this cycle in Mayan calendar ends on 21-12-2012. Next cycle, a new age, starts next day. This is just analogical to the launch of new millennium in Gregorian calendar.

"analogical to the launch of new millennium in Gregorian calendar" Will old Mayan computers need a Y2K approach?
