The latest server upgrade lies almost two years behind us. The web server is already closing in on four years. Time to start planning for the next server upgrade.

With new projects popping up every month (105 projects in the stats now), more hosts attached to BAM!, challenges and much more the servers are busy bees. They can keep up now but for example the daily update takes three hours. Shorter is better is more updates per day.

The limit is set at €5000 (that's five thousand euros). Post your suggestions for the ultimate server parts. And don't forget to factor in the little or not-so-exciting stuff like coolers, casing or cables!

Ow: this server will do either stats updates or host the web pages and BAM!. It wil NOT run BOINC! Something with the datacenter charging way too much for electricity....

HA! Maybe they are planning an (electrical ?) upgrade of their own ... and are getting clients to pay for it

And by the way, although I build a lot of home machines for myself and clients, I'm still no expert ....

However, if the budget allows, make sure you plan to use SSDs. I have them in all my hosts now and it's amazing how much faster the machines boot, disk drives defrag, MicroSoft updates and other software installs, etc.

You should never ever defrag a SSD drive. It will degrade its performance big time! Especially when it does not support TRIM.

Sorry, I don't want to take this thread toooo far off topic, but I will make this reply.

I don't necessarily disagree with you, in fact most experts (but not all) DO agree with you. However, my drives are spec'd for an average life expectancy of 1,000,000 hours. Now if I cut the life expectancy to one third by doing the occassional defrag (once every two or three months) that's still 38 years (at 24 hours a day). I think I'll be upgrading a bit sooner than that , so shortening the life expectancy of my drives is not a major concern. Worst case scenario, I have the manufacturer's 5 year warranty to rely on as well. Drives (any drives) do fail unexpectedly from time to time, and I'm prepared to deal with that.
