And why is this so noteworthy? Its not like they are the first team made mostly up of one country to pass 100 million....

Its just like te when they gave notice abot Eternity2.net before everyone found out what its true intent was... dosent look profesonal...

I think that just somebody had too much time and used it with posting news.

If the former combined #1 team "OcUK - Overclockers UK" hadn't set its country to International, they would have been the first British team to pass 100 million...

Hi Tank Master,

I'm sorry you don't agree that this is "noteworthy"....

Dr David P. Anderson (BOINC Project Director) and I discussed how best to improve the "popularity" of all things BOINC back in June (during our teams 3rd birthday chatroom) and the consensus was that BOINC needed to improve it's PR in the media.....

So, I just put together a little story about UBT reaching quite a significant milestone....and hopefully this might lead to increased publicity for BOINC....

regards,

Hi pschoefer,

You are of course 100% correct....but OC chose to become an international team...which means that by default, we took over as #1 UK team....

So, by default, UBT is the 1st UK Team to reach 100 million....that's not my fault, but that's the way it is...

regards

I look after the CPDN news and announcements on the CPDN forums more than anyone else. (The CPDN news on BoincStats is only a small selection of urgent items.)

My criteria for inclusion more or less by order of priority are

* CPDN server problems, giving advice for members

* Problems concerning the crunching of tasks/models

* Boinc server problems

* Launch or withdrawal of types of workunit

* CPDN science news, publications and links

* Copying of selected items of Boinc news

* Links to threads where members have provided important science news or are making a useful facility available

* News of relevant events some members may wish to attend

* News about people concerned with the project

* Reminders aimed at newbies about where to find essential advice

* Project stats when we pass milestones

When there are long intervals without problems or crises, I post items low on the list of priorities. But in many ways these are just as important because they keep members informed and encourage everyone in their efforts. The last and lowest category offers the best opportunity to thank members for their contribution.

The inclusion of the UK BOINC team in the boinc news is a recognition of the important role of the many teams worldwide that encourage and support crunchers.

Thanks for that, mo.v!

I'd congratulate and applaud any UK based team to reach the 100,000,000 credit mark. Just because it happens to be my team is a bonus!

Why are people 'slagging' off UBT's landmark achievement? As one team member said on our forum, "I thought it was about helping people, not getting your name on a roll of honour!"

Grow up some of you, after all, it's all about the science, isn't it?

The UK Boinc team have also taken several boinc-wide initiatives that are not just for members of their own team.

So what's the link between helping people and a credit mark ?

If a team sets up events and stuff as follows, and makes sure to inform everybody including Berkeley about them, its achievements are more likely to be publicly recognised:

My own team which is small in comparison recently got Dr Anderson to speak to a minute number of their members when he was on his way back from Geneva to Berkeley. He probably made this particular effort because they were also inviting some ps3 people:

And of course they will have contacted him personally.

Obviously the Berkeley people can't attend every event crunchers would like to see them at and the boinc front-page news can't celebrate every team's milestones. But to my mind, the inclusion of one presupposes an appreciation of the efforts and achievements of all.

Thanks for the comments about Boinc UK mo.v

It is pleasing that you found our team to be promoting a positive outlook towards distributed computing to the whole of the Boinc community.

Thanks & Regards,
Graeme of Boinc UK.
