The data-center where BOINCstats and Primegrid are located is closing its doors. This means the servers have to be moved to another location (from the same company) which unfortunately is farther away than the current location. During the move there will be an extended downtime, but if all goes well we should not miss a daily update.

I'm not really happy about the move. It's farther away, we have downtime, and even worse, we're breaking something down that works. Moving servers and equipment is asking for trouble.

The exact date is not set yet, I'll keep you informed.

If there is somebody in the area of Rotterdam/Capelle aan den IJssel/Alphen aan den Rijn who's willing to help me move the servers please contact me.

UPDATE

The plot thickens...

Rather than physically moving the servers, we're investigating moving to a cloud hosting environment, similar to Amazon's AWS (although it won't be AWS where the hosting will occur.)

If this works, we'll be using mouse clicks instead of screwdrivers to make this move.

This would change the timing somewhat and put it more under our control. Therefore, we expect to be able to provide a minimum of 24 hours notice before making the move, so it isn't necessary to raise your cache sizes right now. Just check back here each day for updates.

The move will still occur prior to March 1st, but it's no longer dependent on someone else's schedule to physically move the hardware.

Do you have plans in the same direction?

No.

I already investigated moving BOINCstats to the "cloud", like for example Amazon. However, the kind of computing power BOINCstats needs is very expensive on Amazon. It would be more expensive than having own servers and hiring rackspace.

Of course, for Primegrid this may be different. Should they decide to stop sharing rackspace with BOINCstats it would mean that the whole rack-rent will have to be paid solely by me. We already hire the smallest unit so downsizing doesn't help reducing costs.

The move will still occur before March 1st, Primegrid leaving or not.

In preparation of the move I purchased two Dell servers to act as firewall/load balancers. These servers were paid from the Adsense income so there won't be a donation item for this.

It seems that the Primegrid people have decided to stop sharing the rack with us, which is why from March and on the monthly rack fee will be €300. I'm looking into ways to rent some rack space to others (maybe another project or one of the larger teams) to reduce the costs.

I also expect the electric bill for 2012 to hit my mailbox at any time. Fingers crossed the new servers did not eat up too much.

That's just the PG move. No BOINCstats servers have been moved.
