It seems that as new projects are using newer versions of the BOINC server software, newer AMD64 clients are automatically supported.

As many may already know, there's an official AMD64 client for Windows here. I've been waiting for an official version of the AMD64 client for Linux, but it hasn't been released yet. Until then...

The BOINC client 5.10 can now get 32-bit applications from projects that haven't added support for AMD64 (e.g., Lattice, QMC, etc), provided that they run at least the BOINC server 5.0.9. However, such AMD64 clients for Windows may not get applications from some projects that supported AMD64 before due to a platform name change, at least until such projects are updated.

how are you going to report projects with third party apps that app support for native 64bit (like the latest 2.4 chicken is a native 64bit app for SETI for both windows and linux.)

This AMD64 client, as all the previous ones in this thread, do get native 64-bit applications when available.

In my opinion that does not count since it is not the project providing the app. It requires additional work on the part of the participant.

Thats kinda what I was expecting, but was just currious and thought I would ask

So for you can get 64bit apps for windows and/or lunix in ABC and SETI. Not to long from now, there will be a native 64bit windows app for APS as well.

Hm, I get some strange benchmark error messages from this client on my AMD X2 64 5200 with OpenSuse 64-Bit:
Do 16 Aug 2007 19:44:13 CEST [error] Benchmark: FP unexpectedly zero; ignoring
Do 16 Aug 2007 19:44:13 CEST [error] Benchmark: int unexpectedly zero; ignoring

The benchmark values seem to be okay after it, but integer MIPS are much lower than with the 5.8.17 client earlier...

As far as I know, if there is an error during benchmarks, it uses "default values" which may have absolutely nothing to do with your system performance.

Indeed, I hadn't noticed this issue. The development version available from BOINC, 5.10.8, doesn't have this problem. However, it fails to contact WCG, that's why I made my build available.

I'll look into it.

Thanks.

Is there anyone who has a list with the speed increases (or decreases ) by using the native 64-bit apps instead of the 32-bit apps?

I know ABC has an increase of 100%, and SIMAP's HMMR about 7%, but are there more "benchmarks"?

That is difficult to do, for it varies between OS types and CPU types.

However, no, I do not believe there are any charts.

In ABC, My core2duo went from 1,250 to 2,800 by switching to the 64bit app.

Consider ABC a special case; x64 gives a LOT more performance than x86, because their math is based on 64-bit integers.

Since all new projects handle this correctly (because they use latest code), how about changing it to a list of what projects don't support it?

I see on Riesel Sieve's site that 64bit platform in listed for both types of apps. Anyone know for sure they are still sending out 32bit apps to 64bit clients?

The list is indeed getting rather large, but an extensive list is still a good way to check if a project supports 64-bit clients.

After all, some of the pioneer and most popular projects were among the last ones to support such clients, e.g., SETI and Einstein. And still no word about CPDN...
