my computer is running under ubuntu 64bit. i install boinc from the ubuntu-packages-source and get 5.10.8? if i visit the boinc website, there is the version 5.10.28 for 64bit linux. whats the newer version? normally i think .8 is newer than .28? thx for help!

And normally the officially-supplied version is newer than any package provided by distros.
Not running BOINC anymore for several reasons...

.28 is much newer than .8.

Debian is very conservative about what they let into stable, and Ubuntu takes a snapshot of Debian stable every six months, so anything you get through them tends to be older than what is available on the BOINC website.

Think of it as .08, for they would put .80 if it ever did get up that high.

The period on version numbers is a separator, not a decimal point. 0.1 and 0.10 are not the same. 0.11 is newer than 0.2. But 0.1.1 is older than 0.2, it means an extra revision after 0.1.
