If BOINC Manager is closed, nothing about the BOINC client will work.

Under Linux, if you start BOINC with run_manager, it will stop as well once you close the manager.

Under Windows you can close the manager without BOINC being stopped as well. The client will work further, will upload and download old/new work, will behave according to your preferences.
This will happen if you use the X in the upper right corner or the menue item "Close Manager", if you choose "Exit BOINC" you will end the whole thing.

If you run it as a service you can't even close it with the manager afaik but only with the Windows task manager.

I believe your mistaken Sid, on all my Box's the BOINC Client will run, get new work, upload finished work, report finished work without ever opening the BOINC Manager & that's not having installed as a service either but just installed as a single user. The only use the Manager has is to Monitor your work, Attach & Detach or Reset Projects & a few other minor adjustments to the Client, Network etc ...

There's good advice to corrupt work, close BOINC with the task manager...

Um no.. If you don't know the correct way of closing BOINC when it runs as a service, then don't say a thing about it, or look up what it might possibly be. I've written the correct ways in a lot of forums lately, as well as added them to the FAQs.

Ways to stop BOINC 6.2.x when running as a service:

1) BOINC Manager->Advanced view->Advanced->Shut down connected client->OK->Cancel followed by BOINC Manager->File->Exit.

2) BOINC Manager->File->Exit followed by Windows Start button->Run, type net stop boinc, click OK.

3) BOINC Manager->File->Exit followed by Windows Start button->Run, type services.msc, click OK. Find BOINC in the Services applet. Right click on it, choose Stop from the drop-down menu.

To start BOINC and the service again, just go Start->Programs->BOINC->BOINC Manager link.

afaik this will start boinc.exe as a task not as service - so if you close BOINC Manager afterwards, boinc.exe will be shut down also.

the correct way would be to use net start boinc or to start the service via services.msc.

Tried and tested, patent Jord. When BOINC 6 is installed as a service, but not running and you start BOINC Manager it will start the service.
Stop BM and BOINC will happily chug on.
