Hi All,

This may be a project specific issue, but in my tiny mind it "feels" more like a BOINC manager issue, so I decided to post my question here...

I have an old P4 XP32 host with an HD3850 GPU and currently run BOINC 6.10.24. This setup crunches Collatz or the new stock MilkyWay ATI app separately without any problems. However, when I allow work on both projects at the same time, only Collatz is crunched. The only way MW WUs run is if/when Collatz is suspended or there are no more Collatz WUs. I didn't do exhaustive testing and maybe the 36 hours I let things go on their own wasn't a long enough for BOINC's debt management to kick in, but this just doesn't seem right.

I had been running the MW optimized app, but detached/re-attached to run the new stock MW app. I thought all the directories were gone/empty, but maybe something was left behind that is interfering with the BOINC manager. At both MW and Collatz, my preferences are set for GPU work only.

Is anybody out there running MW and Collatz, ATI GPU WU only, on the same host at the same time and having similar issues or no issues at all? I thought I would ask the good folks here at BOINCstats before hitting the MW or BOINC forums.

TIA,

MarkR

Hi Mark,

my setup is a bit different but I am crunching MW and Collatz on my HD4850, too.

I am using the app_info.xml's on both projects which means it's the same apps as the stock apps but I have some options I can only set in those app_info.xml's: AFAIK when NOT using these files only 1 WU is crunched at a time by the GPU and I want to run 2 WUs at once. Mixing MW and Collatz (1 MW WU + 1 Collatz WU) however seems to slow down the crunching.

But I do get WUs for both projects although I am having more troubles to get Collatz WUs (sometimes I suspend MW and then get a real bunch of Collatz. *LOL*)
To be true the debt management of BOINC has always been quite a mystery to me but setting an option in your cc_config.xml (in the BOINC directory - or you create a new one and put it there) might help:

<cc_config>
<log_flags>
</log_flags>
<options>
zero_debts>1</zero_debts>
</options>
</cc_config>

But mostly I'm running 1 project on my GPU and switch over to the 2nd one when I get bored or the server's down. *grin*

PS. Maybe someone else has more sophisticated ideas?

A thread I started Here:

Explains what the problem really is...once you get towards the bottom of the thread.

Yo-

But I think that thread is not exactly about what Mark has been asking here...

I saw that thread before posting here...After a quick read, I didn't think that was exactly what I was experiencing, either. However, now that I've read through it s-l-o-w-l-y a couple of times, I think that it probably is.

And, that seems to make sense based on what I see one of my other hosts. I have a C2Q with a GTX 260 that happily runs any combination of MW, Collatz, and GPUGrid. The difference there is that the quad pulls in a cache of 24 MW WUs, thereby, apparently, keeping the BOINC manager happy.

Thanks, YoDude, for pointing me back to the thread in the MW@H forum.

Cheers,

MarkR
