Hi,

Does anyone know if Windows Server 2008 R2 supports GPU computing (CUDA) so BOINC can use a GPU?

I have to redo a server OS this weekend, and if I remember correctly Windows Server 2008 didn't support GPU computing (or it did not support it 100%) so we had to go with Windows 7 for the time being. I'm hoping that Windows Server 2008 R2 will work without any hassels, or it's back to Windows 7, again.

Thanks

From Message 1080575 at the SETI@home Number crunching boards:
Is your home server also a domain controller? If not, then it wouldn't have the same issues with the newer clients. I run BOINC 6.10.58 on two non-Active Directory servers (Windows 2000 Server and Windows Server 2003) just fine.

The problem isn't so much that BOINC 6.x.x won't run on a domain controller, but rather that it can't be installed on a domain controller because the installer is prevented from creating the new BOINC-specific user and group accounts in Active Directory. There was a work-around posted here some time ago, but I can't recall what exactly it entailed.

The one host in my account that is a domain controller runs perfectly well under BOINC 5.10.45. Sure, the 6.x.x clients have GPU support and many other improvements. But since this server doesn't have a GPU and is basically a set-it-and-forget-it installation, I have chosen not to upgrade it until required to by one of the projects it crunches.

Thanks for the info, but for now it will only be used as a fileserver. I need to know if it will support BOINC and GPU's like windows 7 does.

I can't remember what the exact problem with Windows Server 2008 was, I think that BOINC didn't recognise there was a GPU present, or that it could just not run any GPU WU's without having errors or some other issue.

I'm running BOINC on a AMD GPU on a Windows Server 2008 R2 64bit server. I didn't have to do anything for BOINC to recognize the GPU. I should add that I always have one of the latest beta releases on my systems (for testing with BAM!) so I don't know if it's supported in the recommended client.

In the current version BOINC will not recognize the GPU (not only on servers), if you have installed the BOINC software as a service,
because boinc_master as the service owner has no privileges/can't access the GPU.

Remedy: Normal installation, not Advanced and don't tick the protected application execution (= service option).

Ok, obviously I've installed Windows Server 2008 R2 by now :-), (sry for the delay).

I'm glad to report that there has been NO Cuda issue yet and the GPU works like it does in Windows 7.

GPU Computing in WinServer2008r2 is going on strong!!
