Hi,

For the second time a Task is showing 100% in the Progress column, Status Running, Elapsed just keeps accumulating, dashes in the Remaining column and my CPU is running near 100% all the time. The first time was a Milkyway Task and now a ClimatePrediction.net is currently not finishing. Tried using the Update button on the Projects screen in BOINC Manager but that is not clearing out the Task.

The current ClimatePrediction.net has the following values on BOINC Manager Task window...
Progress 100%...Status Running...Elapsed 625:47:xx...Remaining ---...Deadline Tue Dec 15 22:30:49 2015

Doesn't the 100% in the Progress column mean the Task is done and should report and then clear off the list of Tasks? After several attempts to clear the Milkyway Task last time, I finally Aborted thinking it was just a one time event. Tasks from Einstein, Rosetta, and SETI are, so far, running normally. There is a Milkyway Task currently running but won't know if all is well there for a few more days.

Any suggestions on where to start figuring out why some processes are not finishing? Thanks.

Environment:
BOINC Manager 7.4.36
Mac OSX 10.6.8, Mac Mini 2009 (late) Macmini3,1

Some apps don't calculate their percentage very accurately (BURP and Blender, for example), sometimes it's just finishing up a few last things before "completing" the task and sending it back home, and sometimes you'll get stuck at 100% because a task has frozen or one of its processes has failed. Knowing whether to manually abort or wait partially depends on the project, the batch of tasks (some batches have errors that cause a whole bunch of tasks to fail), the previous behavior of your host (some are more error prone than others), and your desire to let it sit for a few minutes to see if it finishes up by itself.

I haven't noticed any Milkyway tasks stalling out, and you might give the CPDN ones a little extra time since they run long anyway.

If you use a Windows Operating System:

Please use "Process Explorer v16.05"

By Mark Russinovich - a tree-type Utility w3hich can show you what is happening behind the scenery - You can Stop Process, Pause Process (Right click on a Process and see the various Options.

There are no "Bugs or Malware" in "Process Explorer, ensuure you get it from the above link only, as some D/L sites add unwanted "extras".

Get the free Utility from: https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx

Run that, and you will probably find, like I did, that your RAM is almost all used up, the CPU soldiers on, but gets nowhere.

When I built this PC, I installed 32GB of RAM, on the basis that I would never use all that RAM, so processes would never stall.

However, recently I had freezes in BOINC projects, and could not do other work either (My PC runs 24/7)

Problem was "memory-stealing" applications, which gradually used all the RAM.

In "Process Explorer" click on the "Physical Memory" graph, the pane opens and you can see exactly detailed RAM usage, plus other variables.

Now to get over the problem, I now sometimes clean out all Cache, .tmp files etc, and then Re-boot twice daily.

Advise your progress, you may have to stop BOINC and Re-boot to read this.

Cheers

Kerry

Hi again artisfun,

I see you run 5 computers, all on Apple OSX Operating system.

Perhaps you could try: http://alternativeto.net/software/activity-monitor/

I don't use Apple products, there may be others who can assist further.

Cheers

Thanks for the replies.

Decided to go the reboot route and see if that helps.

The Progress is now below 100% and the Elapsed time is less than before. Life continues.
